Onboard at the Nürburgring

It may not be what it used to be, but the Nürburgring remains one of the most historic events on the calendar. Formerly the home of the infamous Nordschleife circuit which Sir Jackie Stewart once nicknamed 'The Green Hell', it is back for 2011 as it alternates yearly with Hockenheim.

Overtaking may not be its speciality, but unpredictability is and this is what makes it one of the most anticipated events on the calendar. With six Germans on the grid, including reigning World Champion and runaway leader Sebastian Vettel, not to mention seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher, a home win is highly probable.

It has been rather a long time since Schuey donned the onboard feature posts, but this lap was certainly worth the wait. Driving the phenomenal Ferrari F2004, Schumacher scorched to his sixth pole out of seven in 2004 and later his sixth win. He may not be in contention for victory at his home event this weekend, but his popularity remains in tact.

I have been waiting to upload a classic for this onboard feature and I am thrilled to have found one. Here is Sir Jackie Stewart describing his own onboard lap of the fearsome Nordschleife circuit.

Kimi Raikkonen never had much luck at the Nurburgring. In 2003, after securing his maiden pole, he sprinted of into the distance before retiring with an engine failure. In 2005, after leading for much of the race, the Finn began to suffer from a huge tyre vibration and Fernando Alonso's Renault hunted him down. As he entered the last lap Kimi braked for turn one but his left front suspension gave way in dramatic fashion, and the wheel was torn from the car as he helplessly careered towards the barriers, narrowly avoiding Jenson Button.

Many thought 2007 would be third time lucky for Raikkonen after he took pole position but once again he was robbed of victory. Firstly, he missed the pit lane after attempting to pit for intermediates following a deluge as the race started, before retiring from third with a hydraulic problem. The home crowd will be hoping no similar amounts of bad luck with befall any of their favourites come Sunday.

Josh.
